Our annual meeting will offer an update of ACWA activities and highlight our volunteers for the year. A presentation will follow by a MD-DNR Freshwater Fisheries representative on the unique coldwater resources in our region that support trout populations in Antietam and Beaver Creek.
The Nature Center will open at 5:30 for attendees to socialize and check out the wildlife exhibits. Feel free to bring a food item to share.
Presentation Details: “Cold Water Resources in Washington County supporting local Fish Populations” – by speaker, Michael Kashiwagi of MD-Department of Natural Resources.
Water temperature is a key factor in the distribution of animals in the environment. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Freshwater Fisheries Service has been working to compile information on coldwater aquatic organisms across the state. Washington County contains a diverse mix of coldwater resources. Large streams such as Antietam Creek and Beaver Creek support high quality wild trout fisheries. Small headwater streams maintain native brook trout populations. Other small spring fed streams contain aquatic insects that are only found in the coldest water conditions. The Freshwater Fisheries Service will provide an overview of coldwater community monitoring and efforts to protect and restore these unique ecosystems.
