Wild American plum, or prunus americana, is a native edible fruit-bearing shrub/small tree with very high wildlife value. This species is invaluable for riparian stream buffers, or plantings along waterways, which help prevent erosion and runoff while boosting overall water quality. The American Plum is growing in popularity as Marylanders seek to plant food forests and pursue agroforestry endeavors on both public and private land. To learn more about American Plum follow this link.

Maryland DNR is hosting a collection event for American Plums in Frederick County. Volunteers will learn how to collect the fruit which will be sent to the State Tree Nursery to grow trees for future plantings. Read more about the event in this event flyer (PDF)
