Tree Tube Removal Event

  • Maryland Route 66, Park and Ride Mt Aetna, MD United States (map)

New Date!

Maryland DNR Forest Service is partnering with the Washington County Sierra Club and the Antietam-Conococheague Watershed Alliance to provide some much-needed young forest maintenance on State-owned land near Beaver Creek in Washington County. A forest was planted along a portion of Beaver Creek in the last decade or so, and the tree tubes that once served as a vital shelter for the young trees are now creating plastic waste and hindering the healthy growth of the forest. We need volunteers like you to come out with us and remove the tubes to give these trees a better chance to survive and thrive!

Work includes removing plastic tree tubes from trees, removing fallen tree tubes and debris from the forest, and chopping/removing harmful invasive vegetation that we notice.

We will be shuttling to the actual worksite from the parking lot. Read the event details closely!

Event Details

Location: There is no formal address for this worksite. The meeting location is the Park & Ride lot, right off of 70, exit 35, toward 66/Mapleville Rd. Please see the google maps link below for directions to the parking lot.

Time: Sunday February 4th, 10am-2pm

Parking: Park in the Route 66 Park and Ride located at 10037 Mapleville Rd, Hagerstown, MD 21740. You can also click this google maps link for directions. Because space at the worksite is limited, we encourage volunteers to leave their cars at the park and ride. We will shuttle to the actual worksite from there. We will wait at the park and ride until around 10:10 day-of to make sure we get everyone!

Notes: Dress warmly and wear shoes that are good for walking! Bring warm work gloves. A limited amount of work gloves and tools will be provided, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own tools like pliers, box cutters, hand clippers, and loppers. Be sure to pack a water bottle and a snack! If you cannot stay till 2pm, one of the shuttle drivers can take you back to the park and ride early.

Please be sure to fill out the volunteer waiver form on site before you start working.

Thank you and please let me know if you have any questions. I hope to see you there so we can kick off the new year right- by working together to boost the health of our forests!
