Seed Spotlight: Chestnut Oak Acorns are Dropping NOW!
Chestnut Oaks (Quercus montana) are dropping their acorns in a major way right now, and the Maryland State Tree Nursery needs your help! Our volunteers just spotted thousands of healthy acorns along the Appalachian Trail on South Mountain this past weekend.
Oaks are a keystone species—they support more native wildlife and insects than just about any other tree family in North America. By collecting and donating these acorns, you're directly helping grow locally adapted native trees for Maryland's ecosystem!
Timing is critical! Chestnut oaks belong to the white oak group, meaning their acorns sprout almost immediately after falling. A quick turnaround between drop, collection, and dropoff is essential so these acorns can successfully turn into new seedlings at the state nursery.
Why is collection so critical? ACWA is supporting Maryland Department of Natural Resources in their 5 Million Trees Initiative! They’re committed to raising and planting 5 million native trees by the end of 2031. We love that! Where do those trees come from? All of us! By collecting and sharing these critical seeds, you are helping make Maryland a more biodiverse and environmentally sustainable place!
