White Oak Acorn Collection in Hagerstown

Volunteers are needed to collect white oak acorns at Doub’s Woods Park in Hagerstown

As part of the 5 Million Tree Initiative (5MT) native tree seeds are needed to meet the goal of growing and planting 5 million trees by 2031. During these collection events, all fruits/seeds will be sent to the Maryland State Tree Nursery to support future tree plantings around the State. ACWA is helping coordinate seed collection within our watersheds to support the 5MT Initiative and to raise awareness of the importance of planting native trees.

Friday September 5th from 4-6pm

1307 South Potomac Street
Hagerstown. Meet at the pavilion by the County Park's office building.

Please note:

  • Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and bring own drinking water.

  • Collection ground is uneven terrain and among other trees.

  • There are no restrooms or drinking water available at the collection site.

Flowering Dogwood & Spicebush collection event

Volunteers are needed to collect Flowering Dogwood and Spicebush and seeds. This collection site is private homeowner’s property near Leitersburg, so exact address will be emailed to volunteers prior to the event.

As part of the 5 Million Tree Initiative (5MT) native tree seeds are needed to meet the goal of growing and planting 5 million trees by 2031. Parking is extremely limited so, please consider carpooling if possible. We ask that you sign up and let us know you are coming to anticipate number of cars. Please note:

The Maryland Forest Service is collecting Serviceberry seeds as part of the Maryland 5 Million Tree Initiative to grow seedlings for future plantings. The Maryland State Tree Nursery will accept whole berries, so no processing is needed after collecting them from the tree/shrubs.

Serviceberry collection is tentative based on ripeness of the berries and whether they develop Cedar Rust disease. Learn more about Serviceberry collection in this fact sheet

The MD Forest Service is installing a native wetland shrub buffer along a creek at a farm and needs some extra hands!

Hosted by Bob Schwartz, Maryland Forest Service

Free and open to the public. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required; see link below.

Walking Distance: Less than 1 mile

Pace: Light to moderate exertion. This workday will include pounding rebar into soft ground and putting live stakes into that hole

Exposure: Sun

Terrain: Generally flat, with some steep edges of the creek you can choose to go on. Expect mud as we will be working streamside.

Restroom: No

Parking/Where to Meet: 20230 Dogstreet Rd, Keedysville, MD Volunteers should meet in the driveway of the farmhouse

What to Bring: Work gloves and a hammer if you want to bring your favorite one. Please dress for the weather and for outdoor work. Closed-toed shoes are required and layers are recommended. Please bring plenty of water!

If work is not completed we will resume installing the live stakes on Saturday 4/26 8-10am

Dormant plant stakes that have been installed into the stream bank. The stakes will grow roots to stabilized the bank soil and preventing erosion.

CANCELLED: Help C&O Canal Plant Trees

UPDATE: C&O NPS has cancelled this event until further notice.

Tree Planting with the C&O Canal National Historic Park. Park Staff are requesting volunteer assistance to plant the first small grouping of 20 trees along the towpath. Volunteers will need to walk to the planting location and dig holes for the small seedlings. The group is limited to 8 volunteers, so please email to reserve your spot to help and to be notified of schedule changes.
