Tree Tube Removal & Maintenance Work Day
Help care for a 7-acre tree planting project in Leitersburg/Hagerstown area. Some tree tubes are ready to be removed, plus there is weeding and shelter repairs to do.
12/13 10 am - 2pm (Rain date is 12/14)
No experience is necessary. We will provide the training and tools. We will also have gloves but feel free to bring your favorite pair.
Wear layers to be prepared for unpredictable December weather. Sturdy shoes are encouraged and bring your own drinking water.
Lunch is provided. Sign up to receive project location address and register for lunch.

Park at Smithsburg Elementary School (67 N Main St, Smithsburg, MD 21783), then walk down N Main Street to the planting area. Special notes: Sign in and get tools by the parked Maryland Forest Service truck at the planting location. Wear long sleeves and long pants, as we will be planting a lot of eastern red cedar which can sometimes irritate the skin.

As part of the 5 Million Tree Initiative (5MT) native tree seeds are needed to meet the goal of growing and planting 5 million trees by 2031. During these collection events, all fruits/seeds will be sent to the Maryland State Tree Nursery to support future tree plantings around the State. ACWA is helping coordinate seed collection within our watersheds to support the 5MT Initiative and to raise awareness of the importance of planting native trees.

Volunteers are needed to collect Flowering Dogwood and Spicebush and seeds. This collection site is private homeowner’s property near Leitersburg, so exact address will be emailed to volunteers prior to the event.

Pace: Light to moderate exertion. This workday will include pounding rebar into soft ground and putting live stakes into that hole

Terrain: Generally flat, with some steep edges of the creek you can choose to go on. Expect mud as we will be working streamside.
Restroom: No
Parking/Where to Meet: 20230 Dogstreet Rd, Keedysville, MD Volunteers should meet in the driveway of the farmhouse
What to Bring: Work gloves and a hammer if you want to bring your favorite one. Please dress for the weather and for outdoor work. Closed-toed shoes are required and layers are recommended. Please bring plenty of water!

Dormant plant stakes that have been installed into the stream bank. The stakes will grow roots to stabilized the bank soil and preventing erosion.
CANCELLED: Help C&O Canal Plant Trees
UPDATE: C&O NPS has cancelled this event until further notice.
Tree Planting with the C&O Canal National Historic Park. Park Staff are requesting volunteer assistance to plant the first small grouping of 20 trees along the towpath. Volunteers will need to walk to the planting location and dig holes for the small seedlings. The group is limited to 8 volunteers, so please email to reserve your spot to help and to be notified of schedule changes.
